How we rate factories

We score replica watch factories, not dealers. A dealer sells watches from many factories under one storefront, so a glowing dealer review tells you nothing about whether the movement inside your watch will keep time in six months. Our scores rate the manufacturer behind the watch: the factory that cuts the case, finishes the dial, and builds or sources the clone caliber. That is where quality is actually decided, and it is the level most buyer guides skip.

Why factory-level reviews

Two dealers can sell the exact same VSF Submariner at different prices with different packaging, but the watch performs the same either way. Factory-level reviews let you compare the source, not the storefront, so the rating stays useful no matter where you eventually buy. It also lets us track a factory’s trajectory over time: a QC slip in one batch or a movement upgrade shows up as a change to that factory’s profile, instead of getting lost across dozens of separate dealer listings.

The six criteria

Every factory is scored on six criteria, weighted by how much each one affects the watch on your wrist.

Movement — 25%

The largest single factor, because it is the hardest part to fake convincingly. We look at how closely the clone caliber matches the genuine architecture (calibers like VS3235, DD4130, or 26-330 are common reference points), whether the movement can be serviced by a normal watchmaker, and how often owners report timing drift or dead-on-arrival units.

Finishing — 20%

Finishing covers everything you can see and touch: case geometry, bezel action, dial print quality, bracelet taper, and how close the rehaut and lume come to the genuine article. A factory can nail the movement and still lose points here if the case shape is off.

Catalog depth — 15%

We check how many references a factory covers within its specialty and how quickly it follows the genuine brand when a new reference launches. A factory covering only one or two variants scores lower than one covering the full range plus recent releases.

QC consistency — 15%

Even a well-designed replica is only as good as the batch it comes from. This tracks how consistent quality is across production runs, based on recurring “hit or miss” reports and whether problems cluster around specific references or periods.

Community reputation — 15%

We track sentiment across the last 12 months of forum and Reddit discussion, watching how often a factory is recommended, or warned against, when buyers ask which factory makes the best version of a given watch. This is a rolling window, so an old reputation carries less weight than what buyers say now.

Value — 10%

Value compares price to quality within the same reference, against what competing factories charge for a comparable clone. A premium price is not penalized if the finishing justifies it; a budget price is not rewarded if the watch cuts corners that matter.

How the score is calculated

• Editor’s Choice — overall score of 9.0 or higher.
• Best for [Brand] — top-ranked factory on a brand’s model hub page.
• Best Value — strong quality-to-price ratio relative to peers.
• Best Budget — the most capable option among lower-priced factories.
• Rising — a newer or recently improved factory gaining reputation fast.
• Legacy — a formerly dominant factory whose current output is less certain.
• Specialist — focuses on one brand or model family rather than a broad catalog.
• New 2026 — entered the market or rebranded in 2026.
• Best Gold — the strongest option for gold-case references.
• Niche — covers references most other factories ignore.

Status labels

• Active — currently in production and shipping through dealers.
• Uncertain — reports of enforcement action or supply disruption exist, but watches are still shipping. We never declare a factory closed on rumor alone.
• Limited — production has narrowed to specific references, with reduced availability.
• Unknown — insufficient recent information to confirm current status.

Every status note is dated (for example, “reports in May 2026 indicated…”) so you can judge how current it is, rather than treating it as a permanent verdict.

Sources and update cadence

Scores are built from a 12-month rolling review of r/RepTime and r/ChinaTime discussion, RWI reports, dealer catalogs, and community buying guides. We revisit every score monthly and adjust it when new information changes the picture. Sources used for each factory are listed at the bottom of its review page.

What we are not

We are not a dealer, and we do not sell watches or rank individual dealer storefronts by shipping speed or packaging. Some links on this site lead to partner stores, disclosed on our about page — that relationship never changes a factory’s score.
